Christer Soderberg Awareness Day

October 24th will surely go down in history for the many events, actions, rallies, and meetings. It's United Nations Day and it's International Day of Climate Action (www.350.org). At Open World Café we are contributing by having an "Organic (Low Carbon) Food Day", one of more than 4500 actions in more than 180 countries (and we hope you join us, or any other 350.org event around the world)! I would like this to go down in history as AwarenessContinue

Christer Soderberg What is This Really About?

We didn’t need the financial crisis to tell us that something was wrong. We didn’t need the environmental crisis to tell us something was wrong. Social injustices coupled with ignorance and poverty has been with us for a long time. There is no justification or excuse for the fact that more than half the population of the world, that’s more than 3,500,000,000 human beings, are unable to lead dignified lives; where fathers and mothers can’t bring home enough food for the family to eat a healthy me… Continue

Christer Soderberg Rio 2016 - Summer Olympics - Congratulations!

The Summer Olympic Games in 2016 will be held in Rio de Janeiro! What an opportunity to put "A Cidade Maravilhosa" (The Marvelous City) back on the world's map! The Olympics are of course debatable; do they bring prosperity, or do they just cost a lot of money at the expense of other more important projects? Rio has many challenges, too many to think of (we lived there 2000 - 2002), but nothing comes close to the beauty, the friendliness, and sheer "joia" (joy) of it's it's people the "Carioca"… Continue

Christer Soderberg Stop, Reflect & Listen - London on September 23, 2009

For pictures from the event at Casa Decor UK click here. Coming from Stockholm to London is always an experience; the city is literally cooking with activity, you can feel the energy all around you; business is very much "happening", crisis or no crisis. I made the assumption that activities to alleviate the social, environmental and economic pressures on society and the planet would be equally powe… Continue

Pausha Foley Lords and Ladies

"Is anyone else having trouble sleeping with all these planetary changes?" asked my friend today. "What if planets have trouble changing because we don't sleep?" I asked, in response. "Well, if the planets are trying to align with me, they're in trouble." she answered, and I said: "The fate of planets is in your hands, and so the most important question in all of reality, right now, is: how are you doing?" It was a fun little exchange and yet it stuck with me. How would it be, I wondered, if… Continue

Pausha Foley We are not so very different

I walked in the mountains yesterday. There is a trail winding it's way up a mountain side. It splits at one point, a path goes on, following the mountainside into a valley, another leads up to the very mountain top. I wanted to stand at the top of the world yesterday, so I climbed up. The way up is steep and I was out of breath in no time, paying attention to nothing but my burning legs, my hammering heart, my lungs that were about to burst, and the annoying little flies trying to dive into my e… Continue

Pausha Foley Unrealistic goals

This is the wisest thing I've heard anyone say on the subject of "changing the world" so far: "Look at what realists have done for us. They have led us to war and climate change, poverty on an unimaginable scale, and wholesale ecological destruction. Half of humanity goes to bed hungry because of all the realistic leaders in the world. I tell people who call me 'unrealistic' to show me what their realism has done. Realism is an outdated, overplayed and wholly exaggerated concept." This guy's m… Continue

Please enjoy this article on the benefits of SLOW, reprinted with permission from Positive Psychology News Daily. Savoring: In Praise of Slow By Bridget Grenville-Cleave - August 26, 2009 The aim of life is appreciation - GK Chesterton Why is it that the older you get, the faster time goes? Jacob Rønnow Jensen Groundhog Day

When I think of what is possible, and what is not, I am reminded of the movie ”Groundhog Day”. One of the sub-plots is, that Bill Murray figures out he can learn anything once time is not an issue: being a pianist, and ice sculptor, knowing French poetry, … The same is true for me! If I dedicate 1 hour a day for the next 30 years to learn one thing, I can assure you that I will be pretty darn good at it at that time (assuming I live that long, and if I don’t, I won’t be around to regre… Continue

Christer Soderberg Food We Eat, Thoughts We Think, Things We Do

... if we don't begin to think really hard about what we eat, will we have any chance at solving the physical and mental challenges we face as a species? And is it surprising that the western world (the so-called developed world) with fast-food and the processed food industry is responsible for the cataclysmic effect of man on the environment? How can we turn this trend around? Let's think about what we eat, so that we can think clearly about the things we need to do. Today is the last… Continue

Christer Soderberg Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, . . . & Replant a Rainforest!

The three "R's" can't be repeated often enough, so here is a small contribution. What is so good about the three "R's" is that it gives me a structure to pin my activities, and requires less conscious thought on my part, so I "think" about these things. But what do I do? Reduce: When our two daughters moved out and away from Sweden to study, my wife and I moved from our 280 m2 rented house to a 120 m2 rented house 50 km north of the city, we also went from a gasoline station wagon using… Continue

Pausha Foley If the nature was gone, would we miss it?

It is wonderful to be outside. I begin to believe that living in houses really wasn't such a good idea. It is so spacious, so open, so unguarded to just be out in the world where trees are, where birds are, where the sky is. Working in my yard today was such a pleasure. I was pulling generations of old, dried ferns out of the ground. It was not an easy task, they resisted, clung to the earth with all their might and did all they could to become slippery and fragile, twisting, bending and crumbl… Continue

Nancy Watts "A Thin Place"

"There is a celtic saying that heaven and earth are only three feet a part-but in the "thin places" the distance becomes even smaller. A thin place is where the veil that separates the sacred from the pedestrian is so thin that one is able to catch a glimpse of the mystery beyond. A thin place is anywhere our hearts are more open to the "more"-when we feel the distance we often put between us and the Divine evaporating." Fazenda Ambiental Fortaleza is such a place. A perfect environment and opp… Continue
