This is the beginning of planting the total area of 300 hectares (almost 1,000,000 trees!) made available as a private legal reserve on Fazenda Ambiental Fortaleza. Besides planting trees which protect and help restore the five natural springs on this area and recreate habitats for flora and wildlife, a forum for dialogue on sustainability was established in the community and everybody participated actively in Replanting a Rainforest. A wonderful day for the environment and people from not only the local community but also the international community that helped make it happen. Made possible through donations from www.WeForest.com, members of www.OpenWorldCafe.com, sponsors, partners and friends of www.openworldfoundation.org. The "capim napier" or napier grass can grow two meters in about four months. What the video doesn't show is the 40+ degrees under the sun and 90% humidity the men work in. Highly deadly coral snakes are also part of the scenario, which is why the men wear thick shin protection (one was found and unfortunately killed). 1.8 hectares have been cleared and when this section is ready approximately 5000 native saplings will be planted, beginning this coming Saturday November 28. Five natural springs have been identified on this area to date, all part of the "Corrego da Agua Limpa" (Clearwater Stream), which enters the "Rio Canoas", a major regional river. These springs are expected to more than double their strength once the trees begin to mature in 5 - 10 years.

Replanting this area is possible thanks to a donation from WeForest.com and an extensive network of cooperation between Fazenda Ambiental Fortaleza (www.fafbrazil.com), SOS Mata Atlântica (www.sosma.com.br), Brazil's largest and oldest NGO for the protection of the Atlantic Rainforest, Grupo Ecológico Olho D'Agua, a local NGO specialized in restoring natural water springs, neighbours and friends, both here and around the world (including 350 + members of WeForest.com and OpenWorldCafe.com).

More videos coming soon!
